Chevening Scholarships are the UK government's prestigious international awards program aimed at developing global leaders. Eligibility Criteria

  • Citizenship: You must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory. Nearly 160 countries worldwide are eligible.
  • Return to Home Country: You must agree to return to your home country for a minimum of two years after completing your scholarship.
  • Work Experience: You must have at least two years (2,800 hours) of work experience.
  • Academic Qualifications: You must hold an undergraduate degree that enables entry to a postgraduate program at a UK university. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honors degree in the UK.
  • English Language Proficiency: You must meet the Chevening English language requirement by the deadline indicated in the application cycle:
    • IELTS Academic: Overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any band
    • TOEFL iBT: Overall score of 79 with minimum scores of 17 in Listening, 18 in Reading, 20 in Speaking, and 17 in Writing
    • Pearson PTE Academic: Overall score of 58 with no less than 42 in any band
    • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) or Proficiency (CPE) with an overall score of 176 with no less than 162 in any band
  • Applications: You must apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by the deadline.
  • Prior UK Experience: You cannot have previously received UK government funding for a full-time course in the UK.

Application Process

The Chevening Scholarship application process involves several stages:

  1. Online Application: Complete the online application form on the Chevening website during the application window (typically August to November). This includes:
    • Personal information and educational background
    • Work experience details
    • Leadership and networking evidence
    • Four essay questions addressing your career plan, leadership and influence, networking, and study in the UK
    • Selection of three UK master's courses
    • Two references
  2. Shortlisting: Applications are reviewed and shortlisted candidates are invited for interviews (typically January-February).
  3. Interview: Shortlisted candidates attend an interview at the British Embassy or High Commission in their home country (typically February-April).
  4. Conditional Offers: Successful candidates receive conditional offers (typically May-June).
  5. Final Selection: Candidates who meet all conditions, including receiving at least one unconditional university offer and meeting the English language requirement, are confirmed as Chevening Scholars (typically July-August).
